VET Student Loans

Before You Proceed – VET Student Loan (VSL) Applicants

If you are applying for a VET Student Loan (VSL), please ensure you have the following information and documents ready to provide or upload as part of your application:

Proof of identification (Photo ID) – such as:
- Driver’s licence (front and back)
- Passport
- Proof of Age/18+ Card
Proof of citizenship or residency – such as:
- Australian Birth Certificate
- Australian Citizenship Certificate
- Passport
- Permanent Humanitarian Visa
- New Zealand citizenship documentation
Unique Student Identifier (USI) – you will need to provide your USI. If you do not have a USI, or need to find your existing USI, you can do so via the USI website – Find or Create a USI.
Tax File Number (TFN) – You will need to provide your TFN when completing your VET Student Loan eCAF. If you have applied for a TFN but have not yet received it, you can provide your Certificate of Application for a TFN.
Previous study documents – transcripts and/or qualifications for any previously completed studies, where applicable.
Credit Transfer documents – relevant qualifications or certificates if you are applying for Credit Transfer.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) documents – relevant qualifications, certificates or other supporting evidence if you are applying for RPL.

Important: Please ensure that the information you provide on this form matches the information shown on your supporting documentation, including your name, date of birth and other identifying details.

The information collected on this form will be used to generate an Electronic Commonwealth Assistance Form (eCAF) on your behalf. Completing the eCAF is required as part of your application for a VET Student Loan (VSL).

In accordance with the VET Student Loans Act 2016 and the VET Student Loans Rules 2016, all students wishing to apply for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan must meet the citizenship and residency requirements.

If you were born overseas and acquired Australian citizenship by application you will need to provide one of the following documents as evidence of your Australian citizenship:

If you were born in Australia before 20 August 1986 you will need to provide one of the following documents as evidence of your Australian citizenship:

If you were born in Australia on or after 20 August 1986 and one (or both) of your parents were an Australian citizen at the time of your birth you will need to provide either:

If neither of your parents were Australian Citizens at the time of your birth or if your parent was born on or after 20 August 1986 then additional evidence may be required - please also upload:

Parent's Citizenship Certificate

If you or a parent were born in Papua New Guinea prior to 16 September 1975

If you or your parent were born in Papua New Guinea prior to 16 September 1975 your citizenship status may need to be checked and verified with DIBP. You may need to obtain evidence of Australian Citizenship by lodging Form 119 Application for evidence of Australian citizenship if:

Evidence of citizenship was issued before 1 Jan 2009 and the applicant was born in PNG prior to 16 Sep 1975;

citizenship was acquired by descent before 1 Jan 2009 where the parent(s) was born in PNG before 16 Sep 1975

A citizenship certificate can be accepted as evidence of Australian citizenship if the evidence of citizenship was issued on or after 1 Jan 2009 regardless of the acquisition date or date of birth.

Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holders

Qualifying New Zealand citizens

New Zealand Special Category Visa (SCV) holders will need to provide evidence that you:

Have been a resident of Australia for at least ten years; and

Were a dependent child aged under 18 years of age when first resident in Australia; and

Have been in Australia for periods totalling eight years during the previous 10 years; and

Have been in Australian for periods totalling 18 months during the previous two years

Credit Transfer

A Credit Transfer recognises nationally recognised training you have already successfully completed, so you do not need to repeat the same unit of competency as part of your course. To apply for a Credit Transfer, you will need to provide evidence of your previous completion, such as a Statement of Attainment or Qualification Certificate and Record of Results issued by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

Recognised Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that recognises relevant knowledge and skills you have already gained through previous work, training, volunteering or other experience. If you apply for RPL, an interview will be conducted with your Educator after enrolment to discuss your experience and determine whether RPL may be suitable for you.

RPL requires you to gather and provide sufficient, valid and current evidence demonstrating that your knowledge and skills meet the requirements of the relevant unit(s) of competency. Evidence may include workplace documents or work samples, records of previous training, references or third-party reports, and other evidence of your skills and experience. Please note that RPL is a formal assessment process and is not necessarily a quicker pathway to completing your qualification.

Credit Transfer and Recognition

Collection, Use and Disclosure of Information
